Keep cleanup apps from deleting WebWork Tracker data

If a cleanup app deletes the WebWork folder on your computer, you could be signed out of the desktop tracker and lose tracked time and screenshots that haven’t uploaded yet.

This folder holds your sign-in, the tracked time and screenshots waiting to be uploaded, and the tracker’s log. Cleanup apps and storage tools that empty temporary and cache folders can delete it. The steps below show how to keep these apps away from it.

What happens when the folder is cleared

  • The tracker signs you out and doesn’t track until you sign in again.
  • Tracked time and screenshots that were not uploaded yet are deleted and can’t be recovered.

Signs that a cleanup app cleared it

  • WebWork asks you to sign in again although you didn’t sign out.
  • Time or screenshots are missing for a period before that.

Which folder to exclude

  • Windows: %TEMP%\WebWorkTracker (Silent Tracker: %TEMP%\WebWorkTrackerSilent)
  • Mac: ~/Library/Caches/WebWorkTracker (Silent Tracker: ~/Library/Caches/WebWorkTrackerSilent)
  • Linux: ~/.cache/WebWorkTracker

How to exclude it

Cleanup tools that can clear this folder include Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense on Windows, CCleaner, CleanMyMac, and BleachBit on Linux.

  • Open your cleanup app’s settings and add the folder above to its exclusions (also called an ignore list or whitelist).
  • If the app can’t exclude a single folder, turn off its cleaning of temporary files or user cache files.
  • On a computer managed by your company, ask your IT team to exclude the folder from their cleanup tools and policies.

If something is already missing

Data that was deleted before it was uploaded can’t be restored. If you notice missing time or screenshots, send the tracker log the same day, before anything clears it: in the Desktop App, click your Profile Picture > Send Log. Then contact support with the date and times that are missing.
