Fix Activity Detection Issues on Windows

Troubleshooting: WebWork Shows Idle While You’re Actively Working

If WebWork Time Tracker shows you as idle or displays idle warnings even while you're actively using your mouse and keyboard, this is usually caused by permission issues or outdated software.

What happens when activity tracking fails:

  • WebWork cannot detect your mouse and keyboard activity
  • The tracker thinks you're idle even when working actively
  • Idle popup warnings appear during active work sessions
  • Time tracking may pause incorrectly
  • Activity levels show as low or zero

This can occur due to Windows security restrictions, outdated WebWork version, or insufficient app permissions.

How to fix this

Step 1: Update to the latest version

  1. Open WebWork Tracker application
  2. Go to app settings or help menu
  3. Click "Check for updates"
  4. If an update is available, install it immediately
  5. Restart the application after updating

Running the latest version ensures you have important bug fixes and improved activity detection.

Step 2: Relaunch as administrator

  1. Look for the WebWork icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner of screen)
  2. Right-click on the WebWork Tracker icon
  3. Select "Relaunch as Admin" from the menu
  4. Click "Yes" when Windows asks for permission
  5. WebWork will restart with administrator privileges

Step 3: Test activity detection

  1. Work normally for 5-10 minutes after relaunching as admin
  2. Check that WebWork is tracking your activity without showing idle warnings
  3. Verify activity levels are being recorded properly

How to check if it's working

After completing the steps above:

  • WebWork should detect your mouse and keyboard activity properly
  • No idle warnings should appear during active work
  • Activity levels should show green/active status
  • Time tracking should continue without interruptions

Still showing as idle after admin relaunch:

Updates not installing:

  • Run Windows Update to ensure your system is current
  • Try downloading the latest version from the website

WebWork icon missing from system tray:

  • Check if WebWork is actually running in Task Manager
  • Look for WebWork in the hidden icons area
  • Restart the application if it's not visible

Important information

About administrator privileges:

  • Administrator privileges allow WebWork to properly monitor system activity
  • Some applications running with higher privileges can prevent other processes from working smoothly
  • Windows OS may stop lower-privilege processes from accessing system resources
  • Running WebWork as administrator ensures it has high privileges needed for accurate activity detection
  • This is necessary for accurate time tracking on Windows
  • WebWork only monitors activity levels, not specific content or keystrokes

Security considerations:

  • Running as administrator is safe for trusted applications like WebWork
  • This helps bypass Windows security restrictions that block activity detection

What WebWork monitors:

  • Mouse scroll and clicks (not specific locations or content)
  • Keyboard activity (not actual keystrokes or typed content)
  • Overall activity levels for accurate time tracking
  • Application usage for productivity insights
